Why Water Is More Important Than I Thought

Before this year, I didn’t really think much about water.

I used it every day—for drinking, bathing, washing my hands—but I never stopped to wonder where it comes from or what would happen if we didn’t have enough of it.

In school, as part of our learning for World Water Day, we started talking about water in a different way.  Not just as something we use, but something we need to take care of.

At Manchester International School, we learned that even though Earth has a lot of water, only a small amount of it is safe for us to drink. That surprised me. I always thought water would never run out.

But then we also learned that in many places, people don’t get clean water easily. Some children have to walk long distances just to collect water for their families. That made me think about how lucky I am—and how easily I waste water without realising it.

I started noticing small things I do every day.

Sometimes I leave the tap running while brushing my teeth.
Sometimes I take more water than I need.
Sometimes I don’t think twice before spilling or wasting it.

Now, I try to be more careful.

I turn off the tap when I’m not using it.
I take only as much water as I can drink.
At home, I remind others too—sometimes they listen, sometimes they laugh, but at least I try.

One thing I understood is that saving water doesn’t mean doing something big. It means doing small things every day, again and again.

In school, we also talked about how water is important for plants, animals, and all living things. Without water, nothing can survive. It made me realise that when we save water, we are not just helping ourselves—we are helping the whole planet.

Now, whenever I use water, I think about it a little more.

I still use it the same way—but with more care.

On this World Water Day, I have learned something simple but important:

Water is not just something we use.
It is something we must protect.

And even though I am just a student, I know that the choices I make every day can make a difference.
